Kangaru school

Kangaru school was a mixed high school located in Kangaru area of Embu when Njeru cook was the cook and Nyaga VA was in charge of the vocational training workshop. It was a provincial school. This school had its own language or rather almost everything had been nicknamed. Here are some of the nicknames (you need a browser which can read all the five Kĩembũ vowels aeiĩouũ

  1. Amin – a certain headteacher
  2. Amorphous – shorted often to amo referred to a girl not considered pretty
  3. Bhutta raid – Stealing maize at the farm
  4. Candidate – a form four
  5. Clara – a certain literature in English teacher
  6. Dawa – Chemistry
  7. Float – To miss a partner during a dance
  8. Full – A full loaf of bread
  9. Gatĩ – A cigarette
  10. Gatirũ – A cigarette that has been smoked halfway then preserved for later use
  11. Gũtoga – Tell a tall tale
  12. Ipomea – (roast) sweet potatoes
  13. Jiji – Kangarũ shopping centre
  14. Katheci – a master of storytelling
  15. Kĩmwĩgua – Toilet. Also the toilet cleaner
  16. Kionje – A half loaf of bread
  17. Kirare – Baghi
  18. Kĩthĩi – Bread
  19. Kuna mwĩgua – to defecate
  20. Kũtheca – To tell fairy and tall tales
  21. Kũthenga – To scrounge usually for food and cigarettes
  22. Kũthĩa – eating bread. Sharing bread
  23. Kũthĩithua – To be given a piece of bread
  24. Kwamũkĩra – to receive six canes at the Headmasters office
  25. Kwĩnjĩra – To smoke a cigarette as close as possible to the filter without burning the filter or fingers
  26. Massacre – serve food favouring some people
  27. Mecca – The girl’s section. 2. The girls
  28. Monoporise – To hang on to one girl during a dance
  29. Mũfecanĩ/Mfecane – History subject. In reference to mfecane war
  30. Mũnyũ – Tea
  31. Mwĩgua – faeces
  32. Ndeka – A quarter loaf of bread
  33. Ndogo – Tall tale
  34. Njũka – a mono
  35. Pope – a fellow who had mastered the school farm, Vatican
  36. Potential – Potential candidate. Form three
  37. Senior – a form two
  38. Single – A one-eighth loaf of bread. A Ndeka split diagonally into two
  39. Suma – Physics
  40. Trek – walking around the field to the girl’s section
  41. Vatican – The school farm. Rich in sweet potatoes, bananas and maize
  42. Wamavunda – Mrs. Njagi
